Supporting clients through life's transitionary periods
"We can still strive for better, work on our inner challenges and become the best version of self that we can be—that doesn’t happen while we sit on the side lines undermining and criticising those who have the courage to show up, stand up and be bold, courageous and transparent in their vulnerabilities."
Mel has spent 17 years working with people in their different ages and stages of life and challenges. Eleven of these years has been in the community, supporting families and individuals to have their voices heard. Predominantly focusing on people who have been failed by the systemic ways, supporting them to bring their awareness to themselves, their needs, wants, desires, hopes and dreams. Giving voice to the healing that they see for themselves.
Supporting clients regularly with transition to and from various situations and institutions, change and advocacy, such as community to and from jail and transitioning into and out of hospital care. Be it mental health or physical health, rehabilitation transition, domestic violence, homelessness, families and carers support, education and training, recovery focussed mental health support, and in-home support complex care.
Moving through her life with many challenges of her own, Mel knew what it was to feel disempowered and viewed as less than. From this, her goal was to improve in every area of her life and have the chances that she saw available for others.
"I see the purpose of any challenge once it’s overcome, is to offer your services to another. By doing this, you provide a safe container for experiential learning, offer hope, normalise life as it is, rather than buy into the sensationalism of what is doing well and what isn’t.
Our society has been conditioned to believe that anyone outside of the 2.5 kids, picket fence and 9 to 5 job is not doing well enough; that’s a ridiculously outdated and dangerous paradigm to put to such a diverse society. It’s setting us up to fail, killing the brilliance within each person and silencing voices that need to heal.
I absolutely believe in working for what you have, pulling your weight and making a contribution. I also believe that when we see someone who needs help, and we can offer a hand up, that by doing this we support the creation of a better community rather than complaining about 'those who don’t' fit into an outdated framework that we’re not necessarily that happy with ourselves.
We may need to work in jobs that we dislike, under initiatives that are not always aligned with our hearts, if we have certain responsibilities, at times that is a grown-up sacrifice we need to make. We can still strive for better, work on our inner challenges and become the best version of self that we can be—that doesn’t happen while we sit on the side lines undermining and criticising those who have the courage to show up, stand up and be bold, courageous and transparent in their vulnerabilities.
That is living in the narrow lane of our own fears while believing the delusion that we are whole all by ourselves."
Mel offers support to work practically with day-to-day challenges, things that feel repetitive or areas that you feel you just can’t get traction. Mel works with a strength based focus, encouraging people to look at what they do well, broadening the focus to be more holistic than narrow on just the challenge.
Mel’s approach works with your value system, exploring self-reflection, looking at where there may be discomfort at owning the bits that you don’t really like looking at about yourself, why we project when we feel disempowered and gentle ways to work toward a deeper sense of self determination. Whether it’s in your main stream work life, family life or just some things you don’t really like talking about but they nag at you quietly, these are the things that can often occupy our time with repetitive thoughts, sometimes driving us spare!!! We can change our habits if we want to.
Of course we look at solution focussed ways, we chat about goals, we self-reflect/reflective practice and we look at the amazing soul that you are. We review our conditioning, look at who’s words you are saying, who is holding the goal posts for you or who we’re allowing to hold our measuring stick. You’ll be surprised!
“Once we accept that we’re having this happen, be it some negative self-talk, needing to control situations, buying into our own stuff or that of others – thoughts of ourselves or not speaking up for what we need, we can start to shift the stagnant ways that hold it there. If we keep avoiding it, it will stay there quite happily, we have to be proactive in approaching it with a curious mind, with the intention of understanding why we do it, think it or believe it, often the desire quickly follows to do things slightly differently; I love watching the light bulb moments of others when they come to their own realisation of their patterns, AND knowing they can do it differently.
It is a common thing that unconsciously, we feel we need permission to be more of who we are so we are happier within ourselves, we’re often unconsciously people pleasers, we can still do that but in a way that is win win, not win for others and draining for us”.
